Multisensory art projects launched

NGO aims to educate people about deafblindness through tactile art exhibition

Ahmedabad: Sense International India will organise two events on art projects – Art Makes Sense (an interactive tactile art exhibition) at Hyatt on Tuesday, and Sens (a disabilityemulation) at Blind People’s Association (BPA) in Vastrapur – on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The multi-sensory art projects aim to educate people about deafblindness, visual and hearing impairments, that affects mobility, communication, learning and understanding of the world around.

“Around 20 deafblind children and adults and their interpreters in Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru will be working with artists to create unique art pieces in a
two-day workshop, which can be appreciated using the senses such as touch. They will form multi-sensory tactile artwork using multiple mediums that will share a peek into the world of a deafblind individual,” said Murray Culshaw, chairperson, Sense India.

In Art Makes Sense, over 80 tactile art pieces by 63 artists will be showcased. The artisis have created tactile artworks in their signature style using textures and art installations that can be felt through touch instead of only being seen. Out of 63 artists from across the country, 20 are from Gujarat.

Chaitya Dhanvii Shah, curator and MD, Marvel Art Gallery said, “To create awareness about the deafblindness, the art exhibition ‘Art Makes Sense’ has been organised. Over 63 eminent artists using various textures have created the tactile art pieces.”

SensX will be organised at Blind Peoples Association to give the visitors a glimpse of what it feels like to be a deafblind.

“SensX is indeed unique and is a true emulation of not just the physical highlights of a deafblind person but also makes one experience and touch chords linked to the different physical, mental and emotional aspects as well. It is when you become and feel like one of them, will the sensitivity grow. Our purpose will be achieved in the process with the mass dissemination of knowledge and awareness generation of this unique disability,” said Akhil S Paul, director, Sense India.

Sense India is an accredited organisation by the United Nations Organization (UNO) which has 57 partners operating in 23 states in India. It has transformed lives of over 77,000 deafblind persons who have found a meaning to life with self-esteem and confidence in the past 20 years.
